THE SOUTH CLELEY BENEFICE

Serving the communities of Cosgrove, Furtho, Potterspury, Wicken and Yardley Gobion

Here are some photographs from the service of Commemoration held on Sunday 23rd March 2014 at Yardley Gobion, as part of our year of remembering anniversaries for the 150th Celebration of the consecration of St Leonards Church, Yardley Gobion. The aircraft, a Wellington Bomber based at OTC, Ossington developed an engine fault during a cross country training exercise and came down on the night of 20th March 1944, killing all eight Canadian RAF personnel on board. Their names are on the war memorial outside St Leonard’s church. The villagers remember the plane circling the village before crash landing and bursting into flames on the outskirts. If it wasn’t for the action of the pilot in avoiding the village, much more damage and possibly deaths of the residents would have occurred.
