THE SOUTH CLELEY BENEFICE

Serving the communities of Cosgrove, Furtho, Potterspury, Wicken and Yardley Gobion

Church Wardens

Churchwardens have important legal responsibilities, but the office also has a vital spiritual, pastoral and mission dimension – the duty is to be foremost among the laity in the life and mission of the Church in the parish. A Churchwarden must be a respected local person of Christian faith, conviction and prayer, willing to be involved in the life of the Church and the community. Their role during a vacancy presupposes that they will have a vision for the parish that extends beyond the present incumbent. They link today’s ministry to what has gone before and what is yet to come. They are bishop’s officers, responsible to the bishop through the archdeacon and with the right of direct access to the bishop. They are not officers of the parish priest and are not obliged to agree with him or her, though of course they will have a close working relationship and meet regularly, where the churchwardens will convey the sense of lay opinion on matters to do with the parish.
