St Nicholas, Potterspury

Welcome to our friendly, welcoming church community. St Nicholas church is used every Sunday, with the main service taking place at 9.30am. We have Holy Communion services on two Sundays in the month and Morning Prayer or a Family Service on the other two Sundays. We try to run Sunday's Cool - our children's church as frequently as we can (depending upon numbers and helpers) and always welcome children to take a part in all of our services. On fifth Sundays we host the 4.00 pm service with its alternative liturgy and visiting speakers. The congregation is usually around 30 in number and we are keen to welcome others to join us. Check out what is happening each Sunday on the website calandar.

The church itself is Grade 1 listed and we think it is very beautiful -  it  has been beautifully reordered and the organ has also been recently refurbished. Most windows are stained glass including two modern pieces which were installed for the Millenium. There is an upstairs meeting room for 30, a kitchen and two toilets, an area for the choir to robe and a separate vestry. The tower has 6 bells that are used mostly by visiting ringers these days. All the seats in the church can be packed away to provide a large open space. We have held 1940’s dances, jumble sales, Shakespeare plays, quizzes, flower and music festivals. The church has an active Social Committee fundraising with monthly coffee mornings, one-off musical events and festivals.

Amongst our local celebrations we hold a special St Nicholas Patronal festival when we appoint a boy, more recently a girl, bishop, according to the tradition, and on the nearest Friday to St Nicholas Day we hold the Pury Feast – a lovely cooked meal in the church. We also alternate with the United Reformed Chapel in the village over a much loved Christmas tree festival - all of the trees are decorated by village groups and the lights are turned on during an informal carol service. The village school attends termly for festivals and celebrations. We have also just begun a monthly youth group for local children aged between 7 and 12 - with games, craft activities and food!

We are a welcoming congregation, do come and join us.
