THE SOUTH CLELEY BENEFICE

Serving the communities of Cosgrove, Furtho, Potterspury, Wicken and Yardley Gobion

St Nicholas, Potterspury

Welcome to our friendly church community. St Nicholas church hosts the Benefice Holy Communion on one Sunday a month, with the main service taking place at 10am. On fifth Sundays we host the 4.00 pm service with its alternative liturgy and visiting speakers. The congregation is usually around 30 people and we are keen to welcome others to join us. Check out what is happening each Sunday on the website calendar.

The church itself is Grade 1 listed and we think it is very beautiful -  with an organ that has been recently refurbished. Most windows are stained glass, including two modern pieces which were installed for the Millennium. There is an upstairs meeting room, a kitchen, two toilets, an area for the choir to robe and a separate vestry. The tower has 6 bells that are used mostly by visiting ringers. All the seats in the church can be packed away to provide a large open space. The church has been used for many different events such as 1940’s dances, jumble sales, Shakespeare plays, quizzes, flower and music festivals. The church has an active Fundraising Committee which organise monthly coffee mornings, one-off musical events and our very popular Bank Holiday Afternoon Teas.

On the nearest Friday to St Nicholas Day we hold the Pury Feast where a four-course-meal is served at the church. We also alternate with the United Reformed Chapel in the village over a much loved Christmas tree festival. All of the trees are decorated by village groups and the lights are turned on during our treasured Carols by Candlelight service. The village school attends termly for festivals and celebrations.
